Overview

Introduction

This course is meant to inform local ISDs/ Teachers concerning Grayson College's proposed College Math Prep Course per House Bill 5 requirements.  This one day work shop will provide training on how this course is set up through Grayson College and how it might be taught by our ISD partners.  GC Math faculty, led by Professor Logan Maxwell, will be on hand to explain their thought process in the course design and how it might impact students and their ability to be college ready upon graduation from high school. Below is a brief summary of GC's proposed College Math Prep Course.

Proposed College Math Prep Course:

  • Recommended for high school seniors or possibly juniors
  • Count as 3rd or 4th year math credit
  • College builds the course, approves final exam, and provides implementation effort
  • Student who completes the course and passes the agreed upon final exam receives TSI exemption for up to two years

About the proposed College Math Prep Course:

  • Course will be built in Canvas with OER
  • Online homework platform embedded in Canvas
  • Topics covered: numeric reasoning, proportional reasoning, quantitative reasoning, algebraic reasoning, and probabilistic reasoning
  • Study skills will be woven into the course as well
  • A common exam agreed upon by the college and school district will be taken at the end of the year
